Gray Captures Third In 50 Freestyle At ACCs

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- After the second day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, Maryland is in eighth place with 103 points. Florida State leads the competition with 257 points. Prelims:
In the prelim for the 200 individual medley, sophomore Andy Dilz (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Maryland with a 19th-place swim for a spot in the bonus consolation final (1:51.47). Right behind Dilz was senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) earning the 20th-place position in the bonus consolation final. Miller swam a season best of 1:51.71 in the event. Sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) and senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville,Md.) notched career bests in the 200 IM this morning. Cullen swam a 1:52.83 for 27th place and Shepard finished 30th with a time of 1:53.61.
Senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) led the Terrapins with a season best of 20.31 in the 50 free for a sixth-place seed in tonight's championship final. Sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.) finished 10th in the 50 free for a spot in the consolation final after swimming a season-best time of 20.54 in the prelim. Earning an alternate position in tonight's final with a career-best time of 21.01 was freshman Ryan Greene (Minnetonka, Minn.) in 26th place. Junior Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) finished in 29th and 38th place respectively for the 50 free. Both established career-best times in the event; DiPiazza swam a 21.11 while Closs finished with a time of 21.38. Finals:
Miller represented Maryland in the bonus consolation final for the 200 IM swimming a 1:53.04 for a 22nd-overall placement. In the championship final for the 50 free, Gray captured the third-place position. Gray topped his season best established in prelims and posted an NCAA B-cut time of 20.01, tallying 16 points for the Terps. Kim won the consolation final for the 50 free with a ninth-place overall finish and a career-best time of 20.20 (nine points). Maryland closed out the second day of ACCs with a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay for 28 points. The squad of Kim, Gray, Greene and DiPiazza swam a season-best time of 1:21.08 in the event. Virginia Tech won the relay with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:19.47. Individual winners for tonight's events included Kyle Young in the 500 free (Florida State; NCAA B-cut time of 4:19.16), Pat Mellors in the 200 IM (Virginia; NCAA A-cut time of 1:45.77) and Alex Kennon (Florida State; NCAA B-cut time of 19.84). ACC Championships for the men will continue tomorrow morning with prelims for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke starting at 11:00 a.m. Finals for these events in addition to the 400 medley relay will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
