Ten fresh faces take to pool for Maryland in 2011-12 season

As a Freshman (2011-12): Top five performer for the Terps in the 200 free (1:42.11), 100 fly (49.31) and 200 fly (1:49.07)...captured 21st in the 100 fly (49.41) and finished 17th in the 200 fly at the 2012 ACC Championships...took fourth in the 100 fly (50.21), fifth in the 200 fly (1:51.68) and 11th in the 200 free (1:42.11) at the Terrapin Cup.

Before Maryland: Swam for four seasons at Blake High School under head coach Jared Fribush...finished first at 2011 METRO's Championships in 100 fly...2011 first team All-Metro, All-Gazette, All-County, and All-Division...holds records in 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 back, and 100 fly at Blake...swam for 11 seasons for Flying Gull Aquatic Club under head coach Dan Haines...named Academic All-American by USA swimming.

Personal: Full name is Spencer L. Sterling...son of Ron and Becky Sterling...has one sister, Sarah, 16...hometown is Silver Spring, MD...chose Maryland because he liked the team and for the school's academic reputation...his great uncle Arnie Risen is an NBA Hall of Famer...hopes to become a doctor after college.
