Mark Sowa joins the Terrapins after spending the last three seasons as the assistant women's swimming coach at the University of Richmond.
At Richmond, Sowa helped rebuild the Spiders swim team into a nationally competitive program, leading them to three consecutive Atlantic Ten Championships - the first three in school history - and a 32nd-place finish at the 2004 NCAA Championships. He also served as the director of the University of Richmond Spider Swim Camp.
Before Richmond, Sowa served as the senior assistant swimming coach at Brown University. He has coached three Olympians and two Olympic trial finalists.
Sowa also has served as an age group coach for NOVA of Virginia Aquatics and as the head coach for the Highland Hurricanes summer team since 2002, and he was the age group and senior group assistant coach for the Ocean State Squid from 1998-2001.
As a collegiate swimmer at American University, Sowa was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association All-Academic Team during his three-year career.
Sowa graduated from American University in 1998 with a degree in history and philosophy, and he received his masters in American History from Brown University in 1999.
