Maryland Defender Mike Shebuski Talks About The Pluses Of Life As A Younger Brother
Nov. 7, 1999 COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- - Remember that little kid you used to hate in your sixth grade class? You know, the one that would steal you pencil, or butt in front of you in line. Maybe they'd get that extra jab in there during recess that got them to the ball just a second earlier. Whatever it was, even if it was miniscule, you can't remember being more annoyed in your entire life. What ever happened to that kid anyway? If his name was Mike, we may have found him for you. Junior Mike Shebuski (Bloomington, Minn.) will readily admit he learned all he knows from his older brother, Steve. "Being a little guy, growing up like that, being the little annoying guy. It stuck with me," laughs Shebuski, who is three years younger then his older sibling. Shebuski has more than just his feisty nature to credit to Steve, though. "He's the most competitive person I've ever met. You can just be doing anything and he'll make it into a game and he'll have to win," says Shebuski. "I think that kind of it drove me. It helped me, too, because whenever we play, it could get brutal sometimes." The brothers didn't always see eye-to-eye, though, like they do now. It took Steve's leaving for Michigan State, also to play soccer, for the Shebuski's to appreciate each other. Don't worry though, they'll have plenty of time to catch up on lost years on the ride back to Minnesota for winter break. Let's just hope Steve doesn't have to sit next to the annoying guy the whole ride.
