#4 Terps to Honor Seniors Thursday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With Atlantic Coast Conference Championship seeding implications on the line, the No. 4 Maryland men's soccer team will honor its senior class when it welcomes Wake Forest Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The Terps (13-2-2, 4-2-1 ACC) dropped a road tilt at Clemson last Friday. John Stertzer, who tallied Maryland's lone goal against the Tigers, continues to pace the offense with 13 scores in 2011. Seniors Kaoru Forbess, Alex Lee, Matt Oduaran, Casey Townsend and Will Swaim will be honored during a ceremony prior to the squad's regular season finale. Wake Forest is 8-6-3 and 4-3 in ACC play this season after tying defending national champion Akron on the road last weekend. The Demon Deacons have been tested all season long, battling five nationally-ranked foes through 17 games in 2011. Scouting The Terps
· The Terps are led on offense by 2011 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list selection Casey Townsend and his sophomore counterpart Patrick Mullins. Towsend, a Traverse City, Mich., native, is the top returning scorer for the Terps after scoring nine goals for 2010 ACC champion Maryland. He has eclipsed that mark in 2011, with 12 goals through 17 matches. The 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year, Mullins has six goals and has also dished two assists for 14 points. · John Stertzer has been the statistical leader in the midfield thus far, tallying 13 goals, including five game-winners and three multi-goal performances. Helge Leikvang and Sunny Jane have sealed up the remainder of the midfield with rookie Dan Metzger earning significant playing time as the first player off the bench. Jane leads the Terps with six assists. Jereme Raley and Kaoru Forbess have split time in the fourth starting midfielder slot. ·Taylor Kemp returns for his third season as a starter at outside back and, along with senior captain Alex Lee, have led a dynamic defensive effort through 17 games. Widner Saint Cyr and London Woodberry have been solid as well. Maryland is surrendering a mere 0.85 goals per contest. They have allowed only 59 shots on goal all season. · Redshirt senior Will Swaim has started every match but two in 2011 at goalkeeper, replacing three-year starter and current Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath. 2011 Preseason Preview Scouting The Demon Deacons
· Andy Lubahn leads a balanced Wake attack which boasts 11 players with at least one goal, but none with more than four. · The Terps (40g) have nearly two times as many scores as the Demon Deacons (23g) this season. Wake is even in goals scored and goals surrendered. · The all-time series between Maryland and Wake Forest is knotted up at 15-15-4. The Terps topped Wake 3-1 to snap a three-game losing skid against the Demon Deacons last October. Poll Central Thank you Seniors! · The group has compiled an incredible 70-14-5 record in the last four seasons and picked up a pair of ACC titles and a national championship along the way all the while providing countless unforgettable moments at Ludwig Field. ACC Championship Bracket Breakdown · Maryland currently boasts 13 points in the league standings. North Carolina (14 points) can clinch first place with a victory at Boston College (12) Wednesday. A BC win or tie could give the Eagles a shot at the top spot. Duke (13) has no conference matches remaining. #1 Terps Slip at Clemson, 2-1 · John Stertzer netted his team-leading 13th goal of the season for Maryland, which played a man up for the majority of the match after a red card was issued to Clemson's Jack Metcalf in the 23rd minute. #3 Terps Battle to 1-1 Tie at #2 UNC · John Stertzer tallied his 12th goal of the season in the 51st minute to spark the Terps to a crucial tie on the road with two conference games remaining. Maryland thwarted one of the nation's most potent offenses, despite playing a man-down for nearly 50 minutes. Will Swaim led a stellar defensive showing with a season-high seven saves. #3 Terps Trounce #22 Duke, 4-2 · The Terps, who played in front of 7,957 fans and were welcomed with fireworks, scored three second half goals, including two from John Stertzer, to best one of their ACC rivals and advance to 13-1-1 and 4-1-0 in the conference on the season despite being a man down for the game's final 23 minutes. 18 and Counting! · Prior to this season, Maryland averaged 15.7 wins per season since 1994. The Terps have had three 20+ win seasons in that span and have eclipsed the 15-victory mark 10 times. Sure-Fire Stertzer · Junior midfielder John Stertzer has been shooting with lights-out proficiency this season, nailing 13 of the 25 shots he has taken. · Stertzer is shooting at .520 clip, while his shots on goal percentage is a staggering .720. Protect This House · Maryland is tremendous at its home venue, Ludwig Field, boasting a 167-36-12 record since the facility was built in 1995. · The Terps have not lost more than two games at home in a season since 2001, recording a 101-11-8 record in the last 10 years. Chart-Topping Terps · Maryland is also third in scoring offense. Lovin' Ludwig! · This season, Maryland is averaging 4,223 fans per game and boast three of the top ten single-game attendance figures in the nation. Excluding football and men's basketball, only three other Division I programs in any sport in the area outdrew the Terps' soccer program on average during the 2010-11 school year. Townsend Named National Player of the Week ·Casey Townsend was tabbed the NSCAA and Soccer America National Player of the Week after leading No. 2 Maryland to wins against Charlotte and Creighton. · The senior, who was also named ACC Player of the Week, scored two goals on the week, one each against Charlotte and Creighton. Terps Top #2 Creighton for Marquee Win ·The Maryland defense was strong throughout the 90 minutes, holding the Bluejays without a shot until the 48th minute of play. Stingy Terps · The Terps have held 13 of 17 teams they faced this season to one goal or less. Terps Grind Out Win vs. #12 Charlotte · Casey Townsend and John Stertzer scored two of the Terrapin goals, while Charlotte added the third on an own goal for Maryland. Three-Headed Maryland Monster · Stertzer, a native of Oakton, Va., has tallied 13 scores, including five game-winners. Townsend has also tallied 12 goals, including a hat trick at UMBC. Mullins, last year's ACC Freshman of the Year, has six goals in 2011, including two against No. 8 Boston College. Scoring Frenzy · The squad is averaging a league-best 2.35 per game heading into Thursday's match against Wake Forest. The Terps are third in total goals and third in scoring offense nationally through 17 games. Cirovski Nets Career Win No. 300 vs. Radford · The Maryland victory vaults Cirovski into the top 10 among active NCAA Division I men's soccer head coaches. Stertzer's Time to Shine · Junior John Stertzer is in the middle of a breakout season for Maryland. · The midfielder boasts 13 goals this season, more than triple his career mark (four) entering the 2011 campaign. · He has tallied three multi-goal showings, including a pair on his 21st birthday against Rutgers and two against Duke. Townsend Climbs the Charts · Casey Townsend has recorded 38 goals in his decorated four-year career at Maryland. · The senior is currently sixth all-time in Maryland men's soccer history in career goals. He needs one more goal to move into the top five. Jane the Playmaker · Sophomore Sunny Jane finally netted his first goal of the year in a lively contest against Duke, halting a 22-game scoreless drought dating back to Oct. 16 of last season. · Despite the lack of goals, Jane has been incredibly involved with the offense in 2011, leading the team in assists. Jane has tallied a career-best six assists this season, a team-best average of 0.38 per game. Cirovski Nets Career Win No. 300 vs. Radford · The Maryland victory vaults Cirovski into the top 10 all-time among active NCAA Division I men's soccer head coaches. Maryland Soccer on Display in Stanford Win · The crowd, which ranked as the second most in Ludwig Field history, and a live Fox Soccer Channel audience were treated to four first half goals by the Terps, including two from senior Casey Townsend. · The four first half goals were the most for the Terrapins since scoring four on September 15, 2009 against Duquesne in a 7-0 drubbing. Ironically, Townsend scored two first half goals in that match as well. Mullins Snags ACC Player of the Week Nod · Mullins led Maryland to its first 5-0 start since 2004 with his first career two-goal outing in a 4-0 rout of the Eagles. · The sophomore forward netted the second and third goals in the Terps' victory over BC. He was also named to both the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week. Head Coach Sasho Cirovski Townsend Earns Preseason Honors · Townsend was tabbed to the initial 42-player list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the top individual honor in college soccer. A senior from Traverse City, Mich., the 2010 First Team All-ACC pick is Maryland's top returning scorer after tallying nine goals as a junior. · Townsend was also named a College Soccer News Second Team Preseason All-American. ACC Freshman of the Year Returns for Terps · As a midfielder, Mullins was also a TopDrawerSoccer All-Rookie second team pick. · The New Orleans, La., product will move up to a striker position in 2011, accompanying Casey Townsend and replacing four-year starter Jason Herrick. From College Park to the MLS Terps Land Top Recruit · Shinsky is a member of U-17 U.S. National Team where he scored a goal for the U.S. U-17 National Team in the FIFA World Cup in Malawi. Will The Thrill · Swaim began his career at Maryland as a starter during his freshman season and has made a valiant return to a starting role in 2011, giving up only 15 goals in 15 games thus far.
