Clemson, S.C.- - Jason Cropley (La Canada, Calif.) scored for the ninth-ranked Maryland (13-4) men's soccer team at 81:14 to lift the Terps 2-1 over Clemson (8-6-2) for the first time in two years.
Clemson started off the scoring at 17:30 when Mike Potempa fired a shot that rebounded off the crossbar. Bob Cavanagh settled the ball and found Ian Fuller in front of the goal who slipped one past Terrapin keeper Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.). The game was Lewis' first in over two weeks since he was sidelined by a bulging disc in his back. The goal was the only he would conceed all day. He also ended the game with one save.
Maryland brought the score even before halftime when Cropley found the net off a shot from dead center, 15 yards out. Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) served the ball to Cropley, while Mike Shebuski (Bloomington, Minn.) generated the start of the play.
Both teams contested the last fifty minutes of the game very intensely, resulting in six cards (two for the Maryland and four for Clemson) before time expired. The game went scoreless until Cropley hit again on a play that started with Siba Mohammed (Tamale, Ghana). Siba managed the pass to Cropley while falling to the ground. Cropley then hit the net from 15 yards out past Tiger goalkeeper Marc Paisant. With Cropley's second goal of the night, the score became 2-1 and brought the Terps their first victory at Riggs Field since 1988.
Maryland has a week off before it concludes its regular season schedule against Wisconsin at Ludwig Field next Saturday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. Saturday will also be senior day for the Terps. The ACC Tournament begins th Nov. 11 at Wake Forest.
