COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 3 Maryland men's soccer team begins a tough two-game road swing with a battle at No. 2 North Carolina Friday. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. and the match will be shown live on ESPNU. The Terps (13-1-1, 4-1-0 ACC) regained their offensive momentum in a 4-2 slugfest against No. 22 Duke in their last action. When Maryland takes the field Friday, it will be on its longest rest of the season after not playing a midweek match for the first time in 2011. North Carolina was stunned by an unranked Davidson squad, 1-0, on the road Monday night. The Tar Heels were part of a wacky week that also saw both No. 1 Connecticut and No. 4 Akron stumble. UNC is 11-2-1 overall this season, including a 3-1-1 mark in ACC play. Scouting The Terps
· The Terps are led on offense by 2011 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list selection Casey Townsend and his sophomore counterpart Patrick Mullins. Towsend, a Traverse City, Mich., native, is the top returning scorer for the Terps after scoring nine goals for 2010 ACC champion Maryland. He has already eclipsed that mark in 2011, with 12 goals through 15 matches. The 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year, Mullins has six goals and has also dished two assists for 14 points. · John Stertzer has been the statistical leader in the midfield thus far, tallying 11 goals, including five game-winners and three multi-goal performances, and three assists.Helge Leikvang and Sunny Jane have sealed up the remainder of the midfield with rookie Dan Metzger earning significant playing time as the first player off the bench. Jane leads the Terps with six assists. Jereme Raley and Kaoru Forbess have split time in the fourth starting midfielder slot. ·Taylor Kemp returns for his third season as a starter at outside back and, along with senior captain Alex Lee, have led a dynamic defensive effort through 15 games. Widner Saint Cyr and London Woodberry have been solid as well. Maryland is surrendering a mere 0.80 goals per contest. They have allowed only 45 shots on goal all season. · Redshirt senior Will Swaim has started every match but two in 2011 at goalkeeper, replacing three-year starter and current Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath. 2011 Preseason Preview Scouting The Tar Heels
· Head coach Carlos Somoano is in his first season on the Tar Heel sideline. UNC is led offensively by Billy Schuler, Enzo Martinez and Rob Lovejoy, who have combined to tally 22 of the team's 32 goals. · Scott Goodwin is back in goal, racking up a 0.76 goals against average and 26 saves. · Maryland leads the all-time series, 43-23-3. The Terps upended UNC, 1-0, in the 2010 ACC title match. Poll Central #3 Terps Trounce #22 Duke, 4-2 · The Terps, who played in front of 7,957 fans and were welcomed with fireworks, scored three second half goals, including two from John Stertzer, to best one of their ACC rivals and advance to 13-1-1 and 4-1-0 in the conference on the season despite being a man down for the game's final 23 minutes. 18 and Counting! · Prior to this season, Maryland averaged 15.7 wins per season since 1994. The Terps have had three 20+ win seasons in that span and have eclipsed the 15-victory mark 10 times. Sure-Fire Stertzer · Junior midfielder John Stertzer has been shooting with lights-out proficiency this season, nailing 11 of the 22 shots he has taken. · Stertzer is shooting at .500 clip, while his shots on goal percentage is a staggering .682. Protect This House · Maryland is tremendous at its home venue, Ludwig Field, boasting a 167-36-12 record since the facility was built in 1995. · The Terps have not lost more than two games at home in a season since 2001, recording a 101-11-8 record in the last 10 years. Chart-Topping Terps · Maryland is also third in scoring offense and second in the first NCAA RPI rankings. Lovin' Ludwig! · This season, Maryland is averaging 4,223 fans per game and boast three of the top ten single-game attendance figures in the nation. Excluding football and men's basketball, only three other Division I programs in any sport in the area outdrew the Terps' soccer program on average during the 2010-11 school year. Townsend Named National Player of the Week ·Casey Townsend was tabbed the NSCAA and Soccer America National Player of the Week after leading No. 2 Maryland to wins against Charlotte and Creighton. · The senior, who was also named ACC Player of the Week, scored two goals on the week, one each against Charlotte and Creighton. Terps Top #2 Creighton for Marquee Win ·The Maryland defense was strong throughout the 90 minutes, holding the Bluejays without a shot until the 48th minute of play. Stingy Terps · The Terps have held 12 of 15 teams they faced this season to one goal or less. Terps Grind Out Win vs. #12 Charlotte · Casey Townsend and John Stertzer scored two of the Terrapin goals, while Charlotte added the third on an own goal for Maryland. Three-Headed Maryland Monster · Stertzer, a native of Oakton, Va., has tallied 11 scores, including five game-winners. Townsend has tallied a team-high 12 goals, including a hat trick at UMBC. Mullins, last year's ACC Freshman of the Year, has six goals in 2011, including two against No. 8 Boston College. Heavy Shooters · The Terps are averaging nearly 10 shots per game more than their foes in 2011 and is third in the league with 17 per contest. Scoring Frenzy · Maryland is averaging a league-best 2.53 per game heading into Friday's match against North Carolina. The squad is first in total goals and third in scoring offense nationally through 15 games. Cirovski Nets Career Win No. 300 vs. Radford · The Maryland victory vaults Cirovski into the top 10 among active NCAA Division I men's soccer head coaches. Stertzer's Time to Shine · Junior John Stertzer is the middle of a breakout season for Maryland. · The midfielder boasts 11 goals this season, almost triple his career mark (four) entering the 2011 campaign. · He has tallied three multi-goal showings, including a pair on his 21st birthday against Rutgers and two against Duke. Townsend Climbs the Charts · Casey Townsend has recorded 38 goals in his decorated four-year career at Maryland. · The senior is currently sixth all-time in Maryland men's soccer history in career goals. He needs one more goal to move into the top five. Jane the Playmaker · Sophomore Sunny Jane finally netted his first goal of the year in a lively contest against Duke, halting a 22-game scoreless drought dating back to Oct. 16 of last season. · Despite the lack of goals, Jane has been incredibly involved with the offense in 2011, leading the team in assists. Jane has tallied a career-best six assists this season, a team-best average of 0.40 per game. Cirovski Nets Career Win No. 300 vs. Radford · The Maryland victory vaults Cirovski into the top 10 all-time among active NCAA Division I men's soccer head coaches. Maryland Soccer on Display in Stanford Win · The crowd, which ranked as the second most in Ludwig Field history, and a live Fox Soccer Channel audience were treated to four first half goals by the Terps, including two from senior Casey Townsend. · The four first half goals were the most for the Terrapins since scoring four on September 15, 2009 against Duquesne in a 7-0 drubbing. Ironically, Townsend scored two first half goals in that match as well. Mullins Snags ACC Player of the Week Nod · Mullins led Maryland to its first 5-0 start since 2004 with his first career two-goal outing in a 4-0 rout of the Eagles. · The sophomore forward netted the second and third goals in the Terps' victory over BC. He was also named to both the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week. Head Coach Sasho Cirovski Townsend Earns Preseason Honors · Townsend was tabbed to the initial 42-player list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the top individual honor in college soccer. A senior from Traverse City, Mich., the 2010 First Team All-ACC pick is Maryland's top returning scorer after tallying nine goals as a junior. · Townsend was also named a College Soccer News Second Team Preseason All-American. ACC Freshman of the Year Returns for Terps · As a midfielder, Mullins was also a TopDrawerSoccer All-Rookie second team pick. · The New Orleans, La., product will move up to a striker position in 2011, accompanying Casey Townsend and replacing four-year starter Jason Herrick. From College Park to the MLS Terps Land Top Recruit · Shinsky is a member of U-17 U.S. National Team where he scored a goal for the U.S. U-17 National Team in the FIFA World Cup in Malawi. Will The Thrill · Swaim began his career at Maryland as a starter during his freshman season and has made a valiant return to a starting role in 2011, giving up only 12 goals in 13 games thus far.
