Erik Ozimek and the Terps
return to Ludwig Field on Saturday
for the first time in three weeks.

Oct. 18, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- - The No. 9 Maryland men’s soccer teams prepares for two games this week. The first contest is a South Atlantic Region match-up with American. The Terps lead the series 12-9-5. The regional match-up is the third consecutive South Atlantic contest the Terps have had. Maryland rolled past George Mason last Wednesday, 3-1, and defeated William & Mary 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. That puts the Terps on top of the South Atlantic Region in front of second-place Virginia Commonwealth.

The Terps’ second match-up of the week comes against Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are 9-0-4 overall, 1-0-2 in the ACC. Wake Forest’s only conference win came against NC State, with ties against Duke and Virginia. The game marks the first time since Oct. 2 that Maryland will play at home.

The Series Vs. American
The series with American started in 1974 and has continued every year since, making it the longest consecutive non-conference series for the Terps. Maryland leads the series 12-9-5. The Terps are 3-3-1 against the Eagles under head coach Sasho Cirovski, including a second round NCAA loss in 1997 at American. The Terps are 4-6-3 when playing at American, including the 1-0 postseason loss in 1997 which was the Terps’ last loss to the Eagles.

Last Season Against American
Jason Cropley (La Canada, Calif.) scored a career-high two goals to lift the 11th-ranked Terrapins to a 2-0 shutout victory over the American Eagles on Sept. 6, 1998. In a match which was completely dominated by the Maryland midfield, American was held to seven shots and two corner kicks. Cropley first got the Terps on the scoreboard at the 48-minute mark when he connected on a Keith Beach-Steve Armas assisted ball and found an empty net, sailing the ball into the left side of the goal.

Three minutes later, Cropley took a ball from Pierre Venditti off a long pass from Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.) and drove past his defender to slip the ball through American keeper Jeff Angelucci’s hand from 10 yards out.

The Wake Forest Series
Maryland has played Wake Forest every year since 1980, and is currently on a two-game win-streak. The Terps are 5-2 against the Demon Deacons since Sasho Cirovski’s arrival in 1993, including a 5-1 win in the second round of the ACC Tournament in 1996. Maryland’s last loss to the Deacs was a 1-0 loss on Oct. 6, 1996, at Wake Forest. The Terps are 3-3-3 when playing Wake Forest in College Park.

Last Season Against Wake Forest
Steve Armas scored at the 66:54 mark to lift the 20th-ranked Terrapins to a 2-1 victory against Wake Forest. The game was tightly contested throughout the evening, with each team managing 10 shots for the match. Wake Forest forward Greg Krauss got the Deacons on the board first at the 35:43 mark, scoring a breakaway off assists from Serge Daniv and Ben Stafford. Maryland tied the game less than five minutes later, however, as Jason Cropley sent a long cross to Pierre Venditti, who was alone in front of the Deacons’ net and punched it in for the score. Maryland took a 2-1 lead in the second half as Armas deflected from Randy Merkel past netminder Sean Conner to give the Terps the win.

Schmidt Solid in Goal
Sophomore goalie Kevin Schmidt (Westfield, N.J.) got his first career start on Wednesday against George Mason in relief of an injured Christian Lewis. Before Wednesday’s game, Lewis had started 35 straight games.

Schmidt started off on the right foot, notching a win in his first starting performance. He recorded two saves while giving up one goal to the Patriots. The sophomore keeper came up with several key saves in Maryland’s overtime win against William & Mary on Saturday, including two huge stops less then two minutes into overtime to stave off the Tribe. He tallied a career-high seven saves and gave up no goals in the Terp win, the second win overall for the sophomore.

Duo Packs a Punch on Offense
It’s no secret that Jason Cropley and Taylor Twellman pack quite a punch for the Terps. A closer look shows that the two have combined for 13 of the Terps’ 28 goals and 10 of 43 assists. The pair totals 38 points, or 36.6 percent of the offense for Maryland through 13 games. In the Terps’ 10 wins to date, Twellman or Cropley have scored at least one goal in nine of them.

Cropley on the Move
Senior forward Jason Cropley has moved up on Maryland’s career assists chart with two assists last week. Cropley moved himself onto the third and final career scoring list at Maryland, career assists, with his assists on Taylor Twellman’s goal against George Mason. Cropley holds steady this week at 27 goals and is in a tie for ninth on the all-time goals list with Gary Furlong (1985-86). Cliff Krug (1958-60) is on top of the list with 45 goals.

Cropley is also No. 9 on the career points list. The California native is now three points away from the eighth position on the list. That spot is currently occupied by John Garvey (1987-90).

Twellman also has 61 points in his Terp career, that’s five from tying Oyton Tertemiz (1961-63) for a share of 10th on the school’s all-time list.

Maryland Beats Tribe in OT
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.– Maryland forward Taylor Twellman headed the game-winner past William & Mary keeper Adin Brown just over six minutes into overtime to lift the Terps over the Tribe 1-0 on Saturday night at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

Both teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. Maryland had just two shots, both on goal. The Tribe challenged Terp starting goalkeeper Kevin Schmidt three times in the first half. William & Mary’s best sequence came off a corner kick in the 39th minute when Andrew Pillari launched a hard shot from 10 yards out that Schmidt blocked. Brian Hinkey fired a shot immediately off the rebound, which Dan Califf (Orange, Calif.) deflected to keep the game scoreless.

An intense second-half lead to three cards, two for the Terps and one for the Tribe, but yielded no goals. Hermann Trophy candidate Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) had the Terps’ best chance of the half when he sent a free kick sailing towards the upper left side of the net. Brown was there to keep the Tribe in it with a spectacular diving save. When time expired, the Terps’ headed into their first overtime contest of the season.

Less then two minutes into overtime Tribe forward Carlos Garcia fired a shot, which Schmidt blocked. John Feldmann drilled the rebound toward the net, but Schmidt was there again with the clutch save. The Terps would have the answer a little over a minute later when Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) found Twellman for the dynamic header to win the game. Twellman’s goal was his eighth of the season, and his fifth game-winner. The assist was Buete’s seventh of the year. Jason Cropley was also credited with an assist on the play.

Terps Beat George Mason 3-1
FAIRFAX, Va.-– Hermann Trophy candidate Taylor Twellman pitched in with a four-point effort for the Maryland men’s soccer team on Wednesday afternoon to lift Maryland over George Mason in Fairfax, Va. Twellman had one goal and assisted on the other two for Maryland.
Twellman’s goal opened the scoring and came just 7:19 into the first period. Senior Jason Cropley brought the ball down the right sideline, and carefully calculated the cross to Twellman on the left side of the goal. Cropley finally fired, placing the ball in perfect position to give Twellman the header from six yards out. The goal was Twellman’s fifth of the year. He leads the team with seven this season.

The Terrapins then widened the margin when Twellman found Jason Sardis on a cross from the deep left side of the net. Sardis then took the endline cross and made the deposit into the right side of the goal what would eventually be the game-winner.

George Mason’s Chris Villamil got one past starting goalkeeper Kevin Schmidt for the Patriots at 38:37 off a Laszlo Juhasz pass from the midfield. The goal was the Patriots’ first goal in 445 minutes, breaking a streak of 21-straight unanswered goals.

When Schmidt drew the starting nod in place of a banged-up Christian Lewis it broke a streak of 35 straight starts by Lewis in goal. Schmidt recorded two saves in 90 minutes of action to record his first collegiate win.

In another collegiate first, sophomore Nouf Tajini (Casablanca, Morocco) finished the scoring for the day with the first goal of his career. Previously, Tajini had been credited with three assists, but the goal was the first score of his Terrapin career. Twellman was given credit for the assist, making it his second of the game.

Neither team could find the net in the second half. Maryland outshot the Patriots 18-6 and did not allow George Mason a shot in the second half. Fouls were a lopsided 18-6, including a red card for the Patriot’s Villamil at 78:21 after his second caution.
