COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
All eyes in the soccer community will be on Ludwig Field on Friday night when the No. 2 Terps play host to No. 1 Wake Forest in ACC men's soccer action. Game time for the one-versus-two showdown is slated for 8 p.m. and will be televised live on the Fox Soccer Channel.
Maryland heads into Friday's game with a 6-1-0 record, including a 4-0 rout against American on Tuesday night. Freshmen tallied eight points in the contest as Casey Townsend scored two goals, Matt Oduaran put one in the back of the net and Alex Lee and Matt Kassel each chipped in an assist. Townsend paces Maryland in goals with four while Kassel leads the way in assists with 5. The Terps sit atop the conference standings with a sparkling 2-0 record in ACC play this season. Both wins came in similar fashion for the Terps as they scored early in the first half and held on for victories in both Friday night contests at Ludwig Field. Graham Zusi scored the game-winner against Boston College while Omar Gonzalez headed in the clinching score against Duke. The Maryland defense has been tremendous in 2008, holding opponents to only three goals in seven contests.
Wake Forest, the consensus No. 1 team in the land and reigning national champions, is undefeated this season at 7-0-0. The Demon Deacons boast a school-record 12-game winning streak, dating back to a loss to Boston College on Nov. 18, 2007 in the ACC Tournament. Wake Forest narrowly edged Appalachian State on Wednesday night, 1-0, in the Deacon's last outing. Wake defeated Clemson, 5-0, in its only conference game thus far in 2008 and is beating its opponents by an average of more than 2.5 scores per contest.
