No. 23 Terrapins Lose Regional Men's Soccer Battle To UMBC 2-0
Sept. 13, 2000
College Park, Md. - Just hours after finding out sophomore forward A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) would take a medical redshirt this season, the No. 23 Terrapin men's soccer team (2-3) dropped a 2-0 decision to regional foe UMBC (4-1) at Ludwig Field. Herrera was the second Maryland player in less than a week to take a medical redshirt. Sophomore Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) broke his left foot in the first half of the Indiana game on Friday, Sept. 8 and will also redshirt this season.
UMBC's Giuliano Celenza scored twice for the Retrievers to capture the win. Celenza struck first at 18:44 in the first half on an unassisted goal that riccocheted in off the crossbar. Play would be scoreless, despite the Terrapins generating several good chances. Celenza sealed the Terrapins fate with just under 17 minutes remaining when he broke away from his defender, and came at Terrapin goalie Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.). Celenza fired the shot from 10 yds.out, and sent the ball sailing over Lewis into the back of the net.
Despite outshooting the Retrievers 23-8, Maryland lost its third straight and first to UMBC since 1993 when the Terps' lost a 3-1 overtime game at UMBC. The Terps will look to pick up their first ACC win this weekend when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to play NC State on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 2:00 p.m. UMBC's next game is a home contest against LaSalle on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
