Post-Game Quote Sheet
U.S. v Chile
June 20, 2001
World Youth Championship
Wolfgang Suhnholz, U.S. Coach
"I thought it was an exciting game. You saw five goals, which should be fun for the fans. Fortunately we scored more than the Chileans, so I am a very happy person right now."
On improvements and getting comfortable with the team...
"I think we are going to get better with each game we play. As I said after the last game - the match against China was the first game we played together, and so today was almost the second time we were together. And I think you can see that we improved a lot and put together a great performance today."
On the change in formations ...
"We changed our formation a little bit, and we brought in a couple of new players who did very well. I thought (Edson) Buddle had a very good game. (DaMarcus) Beasley up front worked out well and we also moved (Kyle) Martino out wide. I am very happy with the performance and am happy with the situation we are in. We are playing a very tough Ukraine team, but it is great to know that we are able to put ourselves in the next round with a win."
DJ Countess, U.S. goalkeeper
"I think today all-in-all was a really good game. We defended well, and I just think we got a little unlucky on the goal we gave up. I made a save on the first shot, and then the second one goes off my defender and into the goal. The defense played very well today and the offense played very well today, so I think it was a very successful day."
DaMarcus Beasley, U.S. forward and goalscorer
"The outsides were really wide open today. When we got a few chances, we really put it away. That is what it takes at this level against good team. I thought that we played well and that it was a pretty good game."
"The bottom line is that we wanted it more. We didn't come here to lose, we didn't come here to bow down to every other team. We came here to win. We came here to get out of our group. And we played well today and hopefully we can play well against Ukraine."
On Edson Buddle ...
"(Eddie) Buddle played real well today. He can hold the ball, but he can also beat you one-on- one. He's quick and he's a big guy and we need him up top. Hopefully he can do the same thing against Ukraine."
Edson Buddle, U.S. forward and goalscorer
On his goal ...
"DaMarcus hooked me up with a great ball, and all I had to do was put it away. If we want to do well in this tournament that is what we have to do with our chances - put them away. And I think we did that well tonight."
On Ukraine ...
"From what we have seen it looks like they have a good defense. The are physical, they are tough, and I know they are going to be ready to play us."
On the Importance of the Chile Match ...
"We knew that if we didn't win or get a result today that we wouldn't get a chance to go on, especially after the China game. We really dug in today and I think we were more focused and a little more ready to play. That is the way the ball rolls some days. I'm just happy that we won today, and I just think we focused a little bit more than we did against China. Now we can pick our heads up and look forward to Ukraine."
On the play of the defense ...
"The backline definitely helped us out a lot tonight. They played very well, and D.J. came up with some huge saves that kept us in the game."
