Postcards From Trinidad
Each day we will send out a postcard from one of the members of the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team that is in Trinidad to qualify for the FIFA World Youth Championship.
Today's postcard is from ... Midfielder Brad Davis
When we got to the stadium yesterday, walking in to see the crowd - what a great feeling. Seeing all the people there and everyone knowing who we were, it was a great atmosphere. When we were in the locker room before the match getting all of our stuff together it finally set in that we were actually here to play, and it made us realize what was on the line.
I think we got off to our game plan like we were supposed to, going out there and putting them under high pressure. It was a little surreal to see the lights go off in the middle of play. (The lights went out in the fifth minute of play and caused a 15-minute delay.) On the bench we were all a little scared that we would come out flat when they finally got the lights back on, but actually it got out heads even more into the game and everyone seemed a little more focused. We came out even stronger, and then Conor Casey scored a great goal and it just started flowing from there.
When I first went into the game I was very excited. It was my first international game with this team and my first qualification game ever, so it was a special moment for me. I just wanted to go in and play simple. And then in my first game to get my first goal, it was real special. Bobby (Convey) came down the wing and crossed the ball and (Kelly) Gray made a good run back and stole the ball and knocked it to me. I turned with it and was open and just wanted to get it on goal - and it went in. It is my mom and dad's first trip with this team, and that I got a goal made it extra nice.
Waking up this morning I was really relaxed after getting the win last night. That we came out as strong as we did and won 5-0 made us all feel real good this morning.
Wolfgang let us go to the beach today, which was great. We did a little running in that atmosphere rather than running around the hotel. We got to Maracas Beach and just got to play around a little. It was the best beach I have ever been to. We got to play some sand soccer, do a little body surfing and just relax. It gave us the chance to look back at the game and everyone was really relaxed and upbeat. Now we are just really ready to go out tomorrow, play well and hopefully get another win.
Brad Davis scored the fifth and final goal in the USA's 5-0 win against Guatemala in the team's first match of the 2001 CONCACAF qualifying tournament. Davis was the team's second-leading scorer in 2000 with nine goals and three assists.
