Mediate's Golden Goal Lifts Terps In Double Overtime
Nov. 8, 2002
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Domenic Mediate (Southlake, Texas) lifted the 11th-ranked Terps to sudden victory in the 113th minute of play vs. Mount St. Mary's (5-10-3) to give Maryland (14-4-0) a 1-0 win. The game rounded-out the regular season for Maryland, who finishes its 2002 regular-season home slate an undefeated 10-0. The Terps now meet NC State to start the ACC Tournament at SAS Stadium in Cary, N.C., on Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
A game unquestionably dominated by the Terps, who outshot the Mountaineers 24-2, became a gridlock that lasted into the second overtime period. In the 113th minute, Clarence Goodson (Springfield, Va.) advanced the ball into a congested goal area where Mediate put it home for the gamewinner, his second of the season, and his seventh tally of the year.
Terrapin keeper Craig Salvati (West Chester, Ohio) earned his second shutout in two starts against the Mount and had one save. Mount St. Mary's keeper Brian Crum was able to come up with 10 stops, a season-high against the offensive-minded Terps, until taking the loss with Mediate's double-overtime goal.
Maryland travels to the ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C., as the No. 2 seed Maryland and meets No. 7 seed NC State in the opening round of tournament action on Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the SAS Soccer Complex.
