Twellman's Sixth Game-Winner Raises Terps 3-1 Over Wisconsin
Nov. 6, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- - The No. 7 Maryland men's soccer team (13-4) downed the Wisconsin Badgers (6-12-1) by a score of 3-1 this afternoon at Ludwig Field in the Terps' final regular season game. Sophomore Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) scored two goals, including the game-winner for the Terps. Maryland came out flat the first twenty minutes and gave up a goal at 23:36 to Wisconsin's Salil Kenkre. The Badger goal snapped the Terps' out of their lull and Maryland answered less than one minute later. At 24:17, Maryland's Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) lined up for the corner and booted one to 6-2 sophomore Dan Califf (Orange, Calif.) who used his height advantage to head it into the goal for his second score of the year.
Scoring was idle through the half until the 66th-minute when Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) wove his way through the midfield and found Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) on the left sideline. Buete served a high cross to the left side of the goal where Twellman elevated above two Wisconsin defenders and Badger goalie Moriba Atiba Baker to head the ball into the goal for his eleventh goal of the season. The goal, at 66:09 would be the game-winner for the Terps, but Twellman's scoring for the afternoon was not done yet.
At 87:30, Twellman scored on a penalty kick after Wisconsin was called for a take down in the box. The penalty kick was the first for Maryland this year, and sent Wisconsin back to Madison with a loss in their first-ever trip to Ludwig Field.
Maryland now awaits the result of the Wake Forest-Clemson game on Sunday to see whether it will be the No. 2 or the No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament, which starts next Wednesday at Wake Forest. Wisconsin's next action comes in the Big Ten Conference Tournament.
