COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Patrick Mullins added two more goals to his league-leading point tally as the No. 1 Maryland men's soccer team defeated Lehigh 2-1 on Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.
The Terps won their 13th consecutive game and matched their best start in program history (14-0-1).
Mullins, who paces the conference with 28 points, started the scoring early as the Terps went on the attack. Defender Mikey Ambrose passed to Tsubasa Endoh. The midfielder crossed the ball to Mullins over Lehigh goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent. The forward nailed the ball in to an empty net, putting Maryland up in the 12th minute.
The rest of the first half saw Maryland creating multiple chances but failing to convert in the final third. The Terps boasted a 12-1 advantage in shots heading into halftime.
The Mountain Hawks tied the game in the 59th minute. James Meyerkord took the ball in his own zone and ran up the field on a fast break. He challenged Maryland keeper Jordan Tatum before sliding the ball past the redshirt freshman for the equalizer.
Maryland remained on the attack for the remainder of the match. Taylor Sulmonetti, who entered the match at the half and ended the game with four saves, and the Lehigh defense stood strong, thwarting out 15 shots in the stanza before the Terps finally broke through in the 88th minute.
Mullins capitalized with his team-leading 10th goal of the year. David Kabelik picked up the ball in a scrum near the net following a corner kick by Ambrose and dished it to Mullins. The reigning ACC Player of the Week shot the ball to the near post from five yards out, sealing the Terrapin victory.
"We won, that's the positive for the night," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "This game had all the makings of the drama that ensued tonight. Again we missed some chances and they fought hard there until the end."
The Terps have a chance to clinch the ACC regular season title Saturday when they take the pitch against Clemson in the final regular season home game. The match starts at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on TerpsTV Premium.
