No. 8 Maryland Storms Past Boston College, 4-0
Oct. 22, 2005
NEWTON, Mass. - The eighth-ranked Maryland men's soccer team notched its seventh-straight victory with a 4-0 win over Boston College Saturday evening at Newton Campus Field. Jason Garey netted two goals, Maurice Edu chipped in three points on a goal and an assist and Chris Lancos scored his second goal of the year in the victory.
The game was played in steady rain from the opening whistle, but the Terps (12-3-0, 6-1-0 ACC) managed to limit the offensive chances from Boston College (4-6-2, 0-4-2 ACC). Maryland recorded its second shutout in as many games, and goalie Chris Seitz was able to record the shutout without having to make a save.
"Defensively we were very sound," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "I'm proud of the way the guys overcame the tough conditions and found a way to slow down a good attacking Boston College team."
Maryland came out strong and controlled possession in the first 15 minutes of action. Maryland managed four shots, including one on goal, but could not find the net. The Eagles responded, though, quickly finding their rhythm and creating chances in the offensive third. Boston College took six corner kicks in the half, but failed to convert on the chances and was unable to put any attempts on frame.
The Terps finally broke through in the 33rd minute when Edu won a 50/50 challenge on an Eagle goal kick. Edu headed the ball ahead and Garey beat two defenders to the ball and fired the shot from 10 yards out for the score and the 1-0 advantage heading into the half.
Boston College responded in the second half with two good chances in the first five minutes. Sam Brill hit a curling shot from just outside the box that just missed the target and Mike Konicoff hit a hard shot that sailed wide.
Maryland broke the game open in the 65th minute on a left-footed rocket from Edu. Just outside the box, Edu created space for himself, faked a shot first before ripping a shot into the upper-left corner of the net.
The Terps tacked on their final two scores courtesy of penalty kicks after Terp players were taken down in the box. Lancos beat Eagle Keeper Issey Maholo in the lower-right corner and three minutes later Garey notched his second score of the game on a PK.
The Terps will return to action next Wednesday at Ludwig Field against NJIT. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
