Herrick Lifts No. 4 Terps Over Clemson, 3-2
Oct. 16, 2010
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 4 Maryland men's soccer team survived a late scare, outlasting Clemson, 3-2, in Atlantic Coast Conference play Saturday night at Ludwig Field.
Senior Jason Herrick headed home the game-winner at 75:32 off a perfectly served ball from Matt Kassel in the deep central midfield. Midfielders Sunny Jane and Paul Torres also notched goals as Maryland moved to 8-2-1 and 4-1-1 in the ACC this season.
"Herrick had a tremendous game," head coach Sasho Cirvoski said. "His class and leadership really came through with that gritty game-winning score."
Jane started off the Terrapin scoring when he netted his third goal this week, splitting a pair of defenders with a sharp left-footed strike off a set piece that began with a corner kick from Kassel. Kassel's kick sailed across the box to Ethan White, who headed the ball to Jane for an early Terp lead at 38:07.
Torres followed with a goal in the 40th minute. Sophomore London Woodberry set up his fellow classmate with a slick move past a Clemson defender on the near sideline for his third assist of the year.
The Terps' streak of 452 shutout minutes came to a screeching halt when Clemson (3-7-2, 0-3-2 ACC) forward Austin Savage snuck a ball past keeper Zac MacMath midway through the second half. The Tigers tied the game in the 73rd minute when Nick Burton pulled MacMath just enough out of the box for an empty-net goal by Tommy Drake. A resilient Maryland squad then gathered itself and landed the game-winner nearly four minutes later.
"It was a great win and a hard-fought match...I think we made it more difficult than it could have been, but Clemson made it very difficult for us," Cirovski said. "They competed very hard in the first half. They played with five players in the back and really took away some of the things we've been doing well lately.
"I thought our reserves gave us a great spark and helped by giving us that two goal lead."
Maryland stays home for a midweek match with Colgate on Tuesday night. The game will be webcast live on TerpsTV Premium.
