Thompson Nets Two In Terps' Victory Over George Mason
Oct. 11, 2000
COLLEGE PARK, MD - Freshman Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) netted two goals to lead Maryland to a 4-0 win over George Mason at Ludwig Field Wednesday night. W.T. Woodson High School teammate Clarence Goodson (Springfield, Va.) also pitched in a goal and two assists for a four-point evening for the Terps. Maryland is now 6-6, while local-rival George Mason falls to 7-5 for the year.
Maryland didn't take long to get on the scoreboard, and were up 1-0 on a Goodson goal just 43 seconds into the game. Junior co-captain Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) got the assist on the play after a nicely placed cross. The trouble continued for George Mason when defender Rob Klug was red-carded in the ninth minute for a hard foul of Maryland's Thompson on a breakaway. The card was assessed after the defender received his second caution of the day and relegated the Patriots to play one short the rest of the night.
Thompson capitalized on the advantage, scoring in the 31st minute from 20 yards out off an assist from Goodson. The Terps went into the half up 2-0, but didn't let their energy lapse in the second half. In the 60th minute, George Mason's Brent Leiba was whistled for a foul on Terrapin Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio) in the box. On the ensuing penalty shot, Thompson beat Mason's keeper to the right side for his second of the day, and his third multiple-goal game of his collegiate career.
Stammler found the net after Downing and Goodson laced some passes through a scramble in front of the Patriots' goal for the Terps' final score the night in the 70th minute. Freshman defender Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) held the nation's second-leading goal scorer, Mason's Eduardo Lima, scoreless, marking the senior tightly throughout the night. Entering Wednesday's game, Lima was 1.2 goals per game and 2.60 points per game. Maryland goalie Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) recorded his 18th career shutout in the win.
