Maryland Tops North Carolina, 1-0
Oct. 10, 2004
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After several good offensive chances in the second half, senior midfielder Domenic Mediate's goal broke a scoreless tie and gave Maryland all it would need to defeat North Carolina, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field.
With the win over the Tar Heels, the Terps (7-3-1, 1-2-1 ACC) notched their first ACC victory of the season. North Carolina falls to 3-6-2 on the season, and 1-2-1 in conference play.
The Terps were sharp defensively, allowing just nine North Carolina shots on the game. The three shots on frame were saved by Noah Palmer, who was credited with the 26th shutout of his career. David Glaudemans, making his first career start for the Terps, along with backs Chris Lancos, Kenney Bertz and Michael Dello-Russo and midfielder Ian Rodway helped slow down talented forwards Jamie Watson and Marcus Storey. Watson's one shot was saved by Palmer, while Storey got off three shots, but none of them on goal.
Maryland started the game on attack, but was unable to finish several good chances. Mediate's shot in the fifth minute hit the crossbar, and Tar Heel keeper Ford Williams made a solid save on Abe Thompson's shot just a few minutes later. The Terp attack cooled toward the end of the first half, but Maryland still out-shot North Carolina 10-4 in the first 45 minutes and had seven corner kicks.
The Terps continued to control possession in the second half and denied counter attacks from North Carolina. Minutes after Terp goal was negated by an offsides call, Maryland scored the game winner when Kenney Bertz won a 50-50 ball and passed the ball to Mediate's feet. After a nice move at the top-right corner of the box, Mediate slotted a ball to the far post past Williams for the score at 74:12.
North Carolina pressed in the game's final 15 minutes, but was not able to get the equalizing goal.
Maryland will be back in action this Thursday, Oct. 14, when it plays host to ninth-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m.
