#2 Terps Fall at Virginia
Oct. 7, 2011
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 2 Maryland men's soccer team dropped its first game of the season at Virginia, 2-1, in Atlantic Coast Conference action Friday night.
NSCAA National Player of the Week Casey Townsend tallied his team-leading 12th goal of the season to equalize the match in the 61st minute before a late strike to the upper 90 by Will Bates in the 84th minute put the Cavaliers (7-4-0, 3-1-0 ACC) over the top in the physical affair.
After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers struck first with a goal in the 51st minute from Ryan Zinkhan that crossed the box and sailed past a diving Will Swaim.
A defiant Maryland (11-1-1, 3-1-0 ACC) squad kept attacking, despite several unlucky bounces including four shots that ricocheted off either the crossbar or post, and evened the score with a Townsend strike off a Jordan Cyrus dish to the far post.
Bates capped the match with his 10th goal of the season off a Zinkhan assist with less than seven minutes left on the clock.
It was only the second time this season that Maryland has allowed a team to score more than one goal. Maryland outshot the Cavaliers, 19-13. Townsend moved up to No. 6 on Maryland's career goals list with his 38th score Friday.
"We were dealing with some tired bodies and I thought our guys showed the championship fiber that I know we have," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We will learn from this game. Our goal in the beginning wasn't to go undefeated in the regular season; it was to go undefeated in the postseason. We still have an opportunity to reach all three of our goals. We will build from this."
The Terps will look to rebound with a midweek match against Adelphi Tuesday at Ludwig Field. The game is slated to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
