Salyer Leads Terps Over American With First Two Career Goals
Sept. 27, 2000
College Park, Md. - Maryland freshman Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) scored his first two collegiate goals to lead the Maryland men's soccer team (4-4) to a 3-0 win over American (2-4-1). The win came in Terps' head coach Sasho Cirovski's 200th career game as a Division I head coach.
Maryland came out hard for the entire 90 minutes, striving to capture their first home win of the season despite going to battle with only 14 healthy players. Just 5:46 into the game, it was apparent that the Terps would not be denied when Salyer blazed a trail up the left side of the field, receiving the pass and making the deposit in the right side of the net for Maryland's first score of the day. Classmates Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Bryan Vitagliano (Scotsdale, Ariz.) both recorded assists on the play.
Scoring was idle until just before the second half when Vitagliano fed senior midfielder Rob Birch (West Islip, N.Y.) down the center of the field on a breakaway. With 5:35 minutes remaining in the half, Birch sent the shot low into the corner of the net past American goalie Michael Gorsegner (Redbank, N.J.), who recorded five saves on the afternoon.
In a game littered with 43 fouls and eight cards, Maryland was forced to play with only 10 players when Birch received his second yellow card of the night in the 59th minute and was relegated to the sidelines for the remainder of the game. The Terps continued on, unfazed by the man-down situation, and even scored again at 71:29 when Salyer finished what he started. He converted Maryland's final goal of the day on a shot from the left side. Clarence Goodson (Springfield, Md.) was credited with the helper on Salyer's goal, his second of the game as well as his Terrapin career.
Senior Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) recorded his third shutout of the season, and tallied six saves in the win. The Terps hit the road this weekend for an ACC clash with Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m. American's next game is Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. James Madison at home.
