No. 4 Terps Get 3-0 Win Over Jaspers

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Terrapin striker Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) netted the game-winner for No. 4 Maryland, who defeated visiting Manhattan 3-0 Wednesday night at Ludwig Field. The Terps head into Friday's match at No. 8 Wake Forest with an 8-1 record. Manhattan falls to 2-6 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, the Terps finally got on the board when the Maryland's one-two punch of Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Sumed Ibrahim connected for the fifth time this season. Thompson found Erwin Diaz (Washington, D.C.) who hit Sumed in the box for the header and made it 1-0 Maryland with 39:55 remaining to play.
At 62:21, Maryland's Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) made a forward pass through the heart of the Jaspers' defense to Nino Marcantonio (Bethesda, Md.). Marcantonio beat his defender and chipped the goal in over Manhattan goalkeeper Antonio Treglia to take a two-goal lead.
Jason Garey (Gonzalez, La.) finished the scoring action, making the deposit in the lower right corner and giving Maryland a 3-0 win. Marcantonio and Clarence Goodson (Springfield, Va.) were credited with assists on the play.
Redshirt-freshman Craig Salvati (West Chester, Ohio) got his first career start, win and shutout out if the way against the Jaspers, making 3 saves en route. Treglia finished with 10 saves.
The Terrapins are off to their best start since 1968 when Maryland won a share of the NCAA Championship. Maryland went 14-0-1 that season, tying Michigan State 2-2 in the championship game.
In a Top 10 ACC showdown, No. 4 Maryland meets No. 8 Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 27, at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem. The game begins at 7 p.m. The Terrapins return home on Oct. 5 vs. defending national champion North Carolina. The Terps and Tar Heels kick-off at 7 p.m.
