Men's Soccer Defeats Howard
Sept. 23, 1998
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland sophomore forward Jason Sardis scored his first two goals of the young '98 season and added his second assist of the season to lead the Terrapins to a 3-1 victory against Howard on Wednesday night at Ludwig Field. The win improves the Terps' record to 5-2 overall while the Bison slipped to 2-3 overall.
Freshman forward Taylor Twellman found the net first for the Terps, scoring his eighth goal of the season off an assist from Randy Merkel and Sardis. Twellman accepted the cross from Merkel on the right side and tapped it into the left side of the net at the 32:24 mark. It marked the fifth consecutive match that Twellman has recorded at least one goal. Keith Beach connected a pass to Sardis at the 39:12 mark from 25 feet out. For Beach, that assist marked his 25th career assist, which ties him with Eberhard Klein on the Maryland all-time assist ladder. The score would remain 2-0 at the half.
Howard scored quickly into the second half as Kevin Helton headed a ball in off a Jonathan Rutland assist, which resulted after a Maryland foul, and Howard was given an indirect kick. Sardis scored his second goal of the evening at the 54:53 mark off a Twellman-Beckett Hollenbach assisted ball at the left side of the field.
In goal, sophomore Christian Lewis posted three saves for the Terps while Howard's Lyndon Burgess totaled seven.
