Maryland Men's Soccer Dominates NC State 2-0
Sept. 19, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md.- - Maryland (5-1-0, 2-0 ACC), the top men's team according to Soccer America, recorded a 2-0 win over NC State (2-2-1, 0-1 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. It was the Terrapins' fourth straight shutout, and the team's fifth straight win.
Hermann Trophy candidate Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) got things started ten minutes into the game when Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.) found Nouf Tajini (Casablanca, Morocco) across the field on the left side. Tajini crossed to Twellman in front of the net who beat NC State freshman keeper Eric Handley with the header from five yards out.
A physical contest, NC State received four cards during the game with both teams combining for 31 fouls. It wasn't until 63:27 that the Terps scored again. Twellman sent the ball into the box from the right side to freshman A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.). Herrera then sent the ball toward Siba Mohammed (Louisville, Ky.) who put it in for the score to make it 2-0.
In another exceptional outing for the Maryland defense, NC State managed only five shots on the day to Maryland's 23. Of those five, junior Terp keeper Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) came up with three saves while recording his fourth straight shutout.
The Terrapins remain undefeated in the ACC at 2-0, while NC State falls to 0-1. Maryland's next game is Wednesday against Lafayette at 7:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field. They travel to Duke this weekend for a top ten match-up which will also feature three Hermann Trophy candidates, Maryland's Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) and Twellman along with Duke's Ali Curtis.
The Wolfpack hosts Elon College at 3:30 this Wednesday. Their next ACC game is against Clemson next Saturday at 1 p.m.
