#3 Terps Edge Undefeated NC State, 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 3 Maryland men's soccer team picked up its second conference road victory of the season with a win at undefeated #18 NC State 3-2 Friday night.
Jake Pace, Schillo Tshuma and John Stertzer all tallied goals for Maryland (5-0-1, 2-0-0 ACC), which has scored three or more goals in four straight matches. Following an early goal, the Terrapin defense was outstanding, weathering a persistent Wolfpack attack.
Alex Martinez netted his first of two goals in the game for NC State (6-1, 0-1 ACC) at 4:38. After a juke move to the middle, the junior beat Terrapin keeper Keith Cardona to his left for a 1-0 Pack lead.
Maryland answered with less than five minutes remaining in the first half when Pace registered his third goal in as many games with a header from 10 yards from dead center off a beautifully-served corner kick from senior Taylor Kemp.
With the game knotted at 1-1, Tshuma gave Maryland its first lead of the match two minutes into the second stanza. Kemp notched his second assist of the match with a long serve from the far side before Tshuma battled his way through traffic for the goal.
Pace helped generate Maryland's third goal of the match when he was taken down in the box at in the 60th minute. Stertzer stayed perfect on the year in penalty kicks, notching his fourth overall goal of the season and sparking the Terps to a 3-1 lead.
The Wolfpack cut the lead in half with their own penalty kick on a foul by Patrick Mullins in the box. Martinez converted NC State's chance.
"This was a heck of an ACC game and a great win tonight," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We started brightly but fell behind early and our guys showed tremendous resolve and maturity and equalized at the half.
"The second half we came out firing and really put NC State under some pressure. We showed some nice composure to finish the game. The atmosphere tonight at NC State was the best I've seen here in 20 years and it's clear this program is on the rise."
The Terps utilized 19 players in Friday's physical battle.
Maryland returns to action Tuesday with a midweek jaunt to Old Dominion. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
