Terps Men's Soccer Wins Battle Of Top 10 Teams, Downs Loyola 3-1
Sept. 11, 2002
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 10 Maryland Terrapins' men's soccer team upset No. 8 Loyola 3-1 Wednesday night at Ludwig Field to grab a key victory in the South Atlantic Region. Terps' leading scorer Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana), netted the gamewinner just before the half to ensure the Maryland victory.
After over 35 scoreless minutes of play to begin the ballgame, junior-transfer Nino Marcantonio (Bethesda, Md.) threaded a neat pass through traffic deep in Loyola territory to Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.), threatening to put one past the Greyhounds at any moment. Buete found Clarence Goodson (Fairfax, Va.) at close-range, who flicked the one-timer past Loyola keeper Reb Beatty in the 38th minute to put the Terps up 1-0. Scoring wasn't over for the half, however, as freshman Erwin Diaz (Washington, D.C.) found sophomore Domenic Mediate (Southlake, Texas) on the endline with the clock winding down. Mediate fed Sumed in the box, who lifted it past Beatty for a 2-0 Terps' advantage with just three seconds before the break. The goal, the fourth of the year for last week's ACC Player of the Week, would be the eventual gamewinner.
Freshman Kenney Bertz played the part of the set-up man in the 61st minute, finding Marcantonio this time in the box for a crossing strike into the back of the net.
Loyola took advantage of a Goodson foul in the box in the 66th minute, earning a penalty kick after some contact from the sophomore. Greyhound Naill Lepper converted the penalty shot past Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.), dissolving the notion of a Terrapin shutout for the second time in four days as the result of a penalty kick.
Maryland opens conference action on Sunday, Sept. 15, at NC State. That game, originally set for 1 p.m., will now begin at 12:30 p.m. The Terps return home on Wednesday, Sept. 18, against William & Mary. That game will kick-off at 7 p.m.
