COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore sensation Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) scored his first career hat trick to lead the No. 5 Terps over American 5-1. Maryland is now 3-1, while American holds a 2-2 record. American took a 1-0 advantage off some confusion on the Terrapins' defensive end, with Matt Kopack (Kenvil, N.J.) passing it through the center to Melvin Espinal (Houston, Texas), who headed it past Maryland keeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) at 18:01. The Terps wouldn't let the 1-0 American lead last for long, though. Midfielder Sumed Ibrahim came out on top of a scramble from five yards out off a Wes Kirk (Bloomfield, N.J.) pass. Maryland took the 2-1 lead off a perfectly executed set play from a 35-yard free kick. Sumed Ibrahim tapped it to freshman Michael Dello-Russo (Columbia, Md.) who back-heeled it to sophomore defender Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio) for his first goal of the year at 33:11. Stammler's goal would be the eventual game-winner.
Maryland added to its lead in the second half, scoring two goals off similar sequences in the 58th and 59th minute. Sumed Ibrahim got his second goal of the game off a Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) cross from the left side at 58:17. Buete did it again just over a minute later, this time finding redshirt sophomore A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) for the header from the center again to give Maryland the 4-1 lead.
To finish the scoring action off a free kick, Sumed Ibrahim got his first career hat trick when he bended a perfect strike into the left side of the net from the right side of the field for his third goal of the day and a 5-1 Terrapins' win. Maryland's next match will be Sunday, Sept. 16 against the NC State at 2 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The ACC battle will be the first conference contest of the year for the Terps. American's next game is Sept. 15 against Army at 2 p.m.
