No. 8 Terrapins Down Marshall 4-0 In Men's Soccer Home Opener
Sept. 8, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- - Freshman Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist to lead No. 8 Maryland (2-1) past Marshall (1-2) by the score of 4-0 Wednesday night at Ludwig Field. The Terrapins next game is their ACC opener versus rival conference-power Virginia.
Hermann trophy candidate Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) opened up the scoring for Maryland just over one minute into the game when he bounced one in off the crossbar from seven yards out off assists from Buete and Erik Ozimek (Columbia, S.C.). Those assists marked the first collegiate points for both Terps. Buete then widened the gap with a goal at 40:47 when a loose ball situation arose in front of the goal. Maryland would take that 2-0 lead into the half after dominating the Thundering Herd from the beginning. Freshman classmate A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) connected shortly after the break with a 12-yard shot with assists from Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Mike Shebuski (Bloomington, Minn.). That assist was the second of the game for Sardis.
The last Maryland score came at 53:05 when Hermann Trophy candidate Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) found classmate Dan Califf (Orange, Calif.) for the header in front of the net to make the score 4-0. Junior goalie Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) tallied two saves in 61 minutes and gets credit for the shutout.
Maryland meets Virginia on Sunday at 7 p.m. for its ACC opener. The game will take place on Ludwig Field. Virginia leads the series 28-19-6. The Cavaliers won last year's match-up in Charlottesville 4-1. The Terps' lone goal that day was scored by Twellman in the eighty-first minute.
