No. 5 Maryland Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 To No. 11 Creighton
Sept. 7, 2001
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Creighton junior Mike Tranchilla's (Barnhart, Mo.) looping shot into the Maryland goal at 35:19 would prove to be the game-winner for the Bluejays as they upset the Terps 2-1 in the Maryland/FILA Classic. Maryland falls to 2-1-0 while Creighton is 2-0-1.
Scoring opened with Creighton's Luiz Del Monte (Sao Paolo, Brazil) taking advantage of a fastbreak one-on-one to beat Maryland keeper Kevin Schmidt (Westfield, N.J.) to the right side of the net. Jeremy Shelton (Franktown, Colo.) was credited with the assist on the score, which came at 29:50.
The Bluejays scored their second goal of the day, the eventual game-winner, when freshman forward Julian Nash (San Leandro, Calif.) found Tranchilla on the right side. Tranchilla booted one high over Schmidt's head into the left side of the net to give Creighton a 2-0 lead that they would take into the half.
Maryland would mount an offensive charge in the second half to no avail. Freshman Wes Kirk (Bloomfield, N.J.) scored the first goal of his collegiate career off a cross from Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) with 10 minutes remaining to draw the Terps' within one goal, but that was as close as they would come.
The Terps held the shot advantage in the match 15-7. Bluejays' goalie Mike Gabb earned the win with three saves. Maryland's Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) finished the game in goal, ended the day with two saves.
Creighton continues FILA Classic action Sunday against No. 3 Virginia at noon. No. 5 Maryland then meets American at 2:30 p.m.
