Sept. 3, 1999
BLOOMINGTON, Ind-- - Senior forward Alexey Korol scored the game winning goal at 20:52 to lift No.1 Indiana (1-0, 0-0) over No. 3 Maryland (0-1, 0-0) in the first round of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic tonight at Indiana. The Terrapins meet No.14 Butler Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the final round while host Indiana meets No.18 Saint Louis at 3:30 in Sunday to close the tournament.
Maryland came out firing in the first half, outshooting the Hoosiers 7-4, but it was Indiana that went into the half up 1-0 with what proved to be the game winner. Indiana's first big opportunity was squelched when Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) stepped in front of a Yuri Lavrinenko shot just under ten minutes into the game when Terp goalie Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) was drawn out of the goal. The Hoosiers lone goal of the day came at 20:52 when Korol took the pass from freshman Pat Noonan and booted it into the bottom left corner of the net past Lewis.
Maryland had perhaps its best second half of the young season, getting six shots off and having numerous other opportunities in the zone. One of the best scoring opportunities of the second half came at 83:16 when Downing rifled a free kick off Indiana's wall that then rebounded to classmate Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.). Twellman charged the ball for the shot, but was stopped short by Indiana goalie T.J. Hanning. The Terps controlled the ball most of the second half against a physical Indiana team who racked-up 19 fouls on the evening.
Maryland's next game is against No. 14 Butler on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and can be viewed live over the Internet. Click on the special link on Maryland's homepage at www.umterps.com to access this broadcast.com presentation.
