Terps in the MLS
Maryland has also made its presence heavily known in Major League Soccer. A total of 44 former Terps have spent time in the MLS and the program boasts two No. 1 overall draft picks (Leo Cullen, 1998 and Maurice Edu, 2007).
Two former Terrapin standouts have racked up MLS Rookie of the Year honors as Edu earned the honor in 2007 while Gonzalez won the coveted award in 2009.
Gonzalez continued to earn MLS honors in his second season with the L.A. Galaxy being named MLS All-Star First XI before garnering MLS Defender of the Year accolades. In addition, former teammate Graham Zusi was selected to this season’s MLS All-Star Team and was named MLS Breakout Player of the Year in 2011.
