Dec. 4, 2002 COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
After a season of impressive individual efforts, the men's track team looks to continue this trend at the opening of this year's indoor season at the Maryland Invitational this weekend.
The 2002 Maryland Invitational
The meet will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md. This is the second consecutive season the Terps have opened their indoor season by hosting the Maryland Invitational.
The meet is the first of three competitions to be held at the Complex this season. The Terps have a partnership with the Potomac Valley Track Club to co-host the Maryland Invitational.
Teams throughout the East will be competing in the meet, including: Bowie State, Coppin State, Delaware, Delaware State, Duke, East Carolina (w), Goucher College, Howard, James Madison, Johns Hopkins, Lincoln, Lynchburg College, Richmond, UMBC and Villanova.
The meet will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's weight throw and will end after the men's 4X400 meter relay at 5:40 p.m. Times are subject to change.
Last Year's Maryland Invitational
The Terps began their 2001 indoor season at the Complex on Saturday, Dec. 8.
Harold Manning (Glen Burnie, Md.) started his season on a very positive note by qualifying for the IC4A Championships in both the 60 meter and 200 meter race. He took second place overall in the 200 meter and fourth in the 60 meter.
Rob Frelow (White Plains, N.Y.) highlighted the Terrapin sprinters, placing third in the 400 meter competition.
In the jumps competition, two Terps finished in the top five overall. Adrian Nelson (Washington, D.C.) and Brian Misar took second and third place in the high jump, respectively.
A Time To Rebuild
Although this year's team was hit hard by the loss of four graduated seniors, several key returning athletes will help boost the team to new heights.
Likely to take the reigns of the program this year are sophomores Frelow and Ian Moore (Mount Laurel, N.J.), and junior Manning. All three were ACC finalists in 2001 and will look to improve upon their times this season.
The addition of several newcomers will benefit the team this year as it looks to better its ACC standings. Also helping will be sophomore Paul Dorsey (Middletown, Md.) and junior Mike Prada (Fulton, Md.), who were consistent contributors last year and are expected have breakout seasons this year.
Head Coach Bill Goodman begins his 15th season with the Terps, with a staff of five assistant coaches: Roland Desonier, Donald Thomas, Robert Allen, Anthony Gorham and Andrew Dean-Neil.
