Jan. 18, 1998 Track Teams Capture Second at Delaware InvitationalNEWARK, Del. - The University of Maryland's men's and women's track teams participated in the first indoor meet where they were judged as a team this past weekend in Newark, Del., and both brought back home second place finishes. The men were led by the superb performance of freshman Michael Hughes (Bowie, MD) who had a career best, IC4A-qualifying 7.25 feet leap in the high jump for first place. Junior Jamie Wu (Chicago, IL) also did well in the field events for the Terps, taking first place in the shot put with a 53'3.5" toss. On the track, junior Asa Heath (Richmond, VA) won the 55 meter hurdle competition in 7.57 seconds. Also taking first place in their events were senior Carter Bova (Pittsburgh, PA) in the 500 with a time of 1 minute, 6.78 seconds, and senior Robert Van Allen (Ellicott City, MD) in the 3000 in 8 minutes, 40.1 seconds. Sophomore Candyce DeLoatch (Pittsgrove, NJ) had the best day for the Terrapin women, winning the 200 and 400 meter competitions, before anchoring the 4x400 meter relay which also came in first place. Junior Stacey Minott (New Rochelle, NY) and junior Onome Pela (Cherry Hill, NJ) outsmoked the competition in the 55 meter dash, bringing in the top finishes in 7.10 and 7.27 seconds, respectively. Freshman Rebecca Mack (Wilkes-Barre, PA) won the 1,000 meter run in 3 minutes, 2.74 seconds. Up next for both Terp teams is a trip to Virginia Tech on January 23.
