Former Maryland men's lacrosse All-American Joe Walters scored two goals and assisted on another to help lead the United States men's national lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-12 win over Team Canada in the third game of round robin pool play at the ILF World Championships at TD Waterhouse Stadium on Sunday, July 16.
Team USA picked up the victory on Jay Jalbert's unassisted goal with just three seconds remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter.
Walters helped the U.S. build a 3-1 lead early in the first quarter with his first goal of the day off an assist from Kyle Harrison.
Maryland's all-time leading scorer then picked up his lone assist of the game in the second quarter, feeding Scott Urick for his only goal of the afternoon.
With Canada leading 7-6 at the half, Team USA came out early in the third quarter and pulled even on a Harrison score. Walters then scored an unassisted goal at the 12:45 mark to give the United States an 8-7 advantage.
The two teams then battled back and forth for the remainder of the game, culminating with Jalbert's dramatic game-winner.
Walters is now third among all Team USA players in scoring with 11 points on seven goals and four assists. Mike Powell leads the team with 15 points on seven goals and eight assists.
The United States is back in action today with a 4:00 p.m. game vs. the Iroquois Nation at TD Waterhouse Stadium. So far, through three games, the Iroquois are 2-1 with wins over England and Japan and a loss to Canada.
