Megill Selected In First Round Of MLL Draft

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - All-America defender Ray Megill was selected by the Boston Cannons with the ninth pick in the first round of the 2007 Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft on May 31. Overall, four Maryland players were selected in the five-round draft.

Megill, a native of Clark, N.J., is a three-time All-American is the third Terrapin to go in the first round of the MLL Draft in the past two years. This season the athletic defender was among the team leaders with 27 groundballs and 20 caused turnovers. He also proved to be an offensive threat in transition and finished with three goals and two assists.

Another Maryland All-America defender was selected in the second round by the Chicago Machine. Steve Whittenberg was taken by the Machine with the 15th overall selection. Whittenberg, a native of Springfield, Va., is a three-time All-American and is regarded as one of the top on-ball defenders in the country. This season he led the Terps with 32 caused turnovers and also finished the season with 32 groundballs.

The other two Terrapins, goalie Harry Alford and defensive midfielder Jimmy Borell, were taken in the fifth round with picks Nos. 45 and 46, respectively. Alford was another selection by Chicago, while Borell was taken by the Los Angeles Riptide.
