Seniors Lead Terps To 15-8 Victory Over UMBC
April 25, 2003
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - While Mother Nature provided the steady rain Friday night at Byrd Stadium, Maryland's seniors provided the steady offense in the Terps 15-8 victory over intra-state rival UMBC before 1,933 and a live television audience on WMAR and CSTV on Senior Night.
Led by hat tricks from senior all-ACC selection Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) and ACC rookie of the year Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.), Maryland snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 8-3 as the regular season winds down. 12 Maryland seniors and two graduate students were honored before the game, as the veterans tallied seven of the Terrapins' 15 goals.
UMBC (7-5) jumped on the board early, scoring three of the game's first four goals, before seven consecutive scores - including two each from Mollot and fellow senior Ryan Moran (Setauket, N.Y.) - gave Maryland an 8-3 halftime advantage.
Mollot, who moved into a tie for 14th place on the Terps all-time scoring list with 157 points, secured his ninth career hat trick with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter to give the Terps an insurmountable 11-5 cushion. Walters notched his third goal of the game midway through the final stanza.
Senior Jim Sbarra (Great Falls, Va.) helped Maryland dominate ball control through much of the game, winning a career-high nine of 15 faceoffs, while senior netminder Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.) and the Terps' defense had two separate scoreless streaks of 21 and 18 minutes, holding the Retrievers to just two goals in the middle quarters.
Junior midfielder Justin Smith (University Park, Md.) registered two goals and two assists against his former team. Last
season, Smith led UMBC in scoring before transferring to Maryland this fall.
Maryland's other goals came from Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.), Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.), Sean Leary (Troy, Mich.), Andrew Schwartzman (Owings Mills, Md.) and Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.), who had the play of the night, scoring on a behind-the-back shot from in front of the crease off a pass from Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.) late in the third quarter.
The Terrapins have won 10 of 12 games in the series. UMBC was led by senior Josh Gerber's three goals and goalie Tim Flanagan's 15 saves.
The Terrapins return to action with their regular season home finale Monday at 7:00 p.m. in a rescheduled contest versus No. 6 Georgetown.
