"A golfer without the proper training facilities is a golfer that will never reach their full potential as an athlete. To compete at a high level, appropriate facilities are as important as balls and clubs."
Fred Funk, PGA Tour Member
Maryland Golf Coach 1982-1988, Alum (1980)

The University of Maryland Department of Intercollegiate Athletics couldn't agree more with our esteemed alum. Thus, we have embarked upon a special fund raising campaign to support the construction of a short game practice facility for the Men's and Women's varsity golf teams. As a part of Great Expectations: The Campaign for Maryland, we are seeking donations from alumni and friends of the Terrapin Men's and Women's Golf programs to help make this $700,000 facility project possible.

Men's Head Coach Tom Hanna and Women's Head Coach Jason Rodenhaver are extremely excited about the teaching and recruiting opportunities that will be provided by the short game practice facility. Our student athletes will benefit greatly from the private practice opportunities afforded by a short game area dedicated exclusively for the use of our varsity golf teams. This much-needed facility improvement will help the steady progression and improvement of our Men's and Women's Golf programs.

Located in a secluded area near the fourth hole of the University of Maryland Golf Course, the short game practice area will feature:

   • Three practice greens:
         • One putting green (Bent grass)
         • One chipping green (Bent grass)
         • One pitching green (Zoysia grass)
•Multiple fairways providing approach shots of up to 100-yards:
         • Separate fairway areas of Bent grass, Bermuda grass and Fescue grass
         • Slopes, mounds and hollows providing for varied lies
         • Rough of varying height and thickness
   • Multiple fairway bunkers
   • Multiple green-side bunkers
   • State-of-the-art irrigation and drainage system
   • Operations Building for golf supplies and maintenance equipment
         • Building design allows for future installation of indoor hitting nets and digital video swing analysis system

"Practice, precision, instruction and more practice is the name of the game. A player with a good short game will save strokes and win more matches. This facility will help us attract talented student athletes and better develop them to be more competitive in the ACC and NCAA."
Jason Rodenhaver, Head Coach, Women's Golf

"Having your own facility means being able to practice any type of short shot you want. In addition, our student athletes will be able to practice with the balls they play with in competition, rather than range balls. This will allow us to dial in our distance, control and accuracy, which is critical to shooting lower scores."
Tom Hanna, Head Coach, Men's Golf

How Can I Help Maryland Golf?
Maryland Athletics is committed to providing the Maryland Golf teams with the cutting edge facility they deserve. The features of this project represent essential components of a successful collegiate golf program and represents remedies for longstanding facility needs. Maryland Athletic will commence construction as soon as commitments are received for the majority of the cost. The installation of grass tees will begin upon University approval.

The approximate cost to build the short game practice area is $700,000. Separately, the Grass Tees at the driving range will cost approximately an additional $100,000**. Like all major athletic departments across the country, Maryland Athletics needs support from alumni and friends of Maryland Men's and Women's Golf to make this project a reality.

You can support the Men's and Women's Golf programs with a gift for the short game practice facility. Your tax-deductible donation can be made as an outright gift or it can be pledged over a five-year period. Golf project donors who are also Terrapin Club members will receive Terpoint credit for their donation.

Naming opportunities are available with the short game practice area fund raising campaign, including the facility itself, individual greens, and operations building. Additional naming opportunities are available in the existing Maryland Varsity Golf Clubhouse, including the clubhouse itself, the varsity team lounge, coaches' offices, locker rooms and individual lockers.
