Terps to Host Men's Golf Event

Aug. 22, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the first time in recent history, the University of Maryland men's golf team will play host to a collegiate event next month.

The University of Maryland Intercollegiate will be played Sept. 6 and 7 at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort in Cambridge, Md. The 18-team field includes six teams that earned invitations to the NCAA Tournament a year ago and four members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The event will be one of the first in the nation during the Fall 2008 schedule.

"This will be one of the strongest fields of the fall season," said Maryland head coach Tom Hanna. "The course is immaculate and I think the teams will enjoy playing there. The Hyatt has really opened its doors to make this one of the best events in the nation."

The tournament will be played at the River Marsh Golf Club, which is part of the resort. The par-71, 6,801-yard layout is located on the banks of the Choptank River, near where the river empties into the Chesapeake Bay.

The field will include local teams from Georgetown, Navy and Virginia.

Maryland will return five starters from last year's squad, including All-ACC selection Chris Gold. The Terrapins lost only two seniors from a year ago and added a strong freshman class that includes top-10 prep John Popeck.

PARTICIPATING TEAMS - Arkansas, California (Pa.), College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, Georgetown, Kent State, Maryland, Navy, NC State, Old Dominion, Rhode Island, St. John's, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Texas State, Virginia, VCU, William & Mary.

SCHEDULE - Friday, Sept. 5: 18-hole practice round; Saturday, Sept. 6: 36 holes; Sunday, Sept. 7: 18-hole final round.

COURSE - River Marsh Golf Club, par-71, 6,801 yards (Architect: Keith Foster, 2002).
