Peffley Leads Terps at NCAA Men's Golf

ORLANDO, Fla. - Blaine Peffley fired a 2-over-par 74 to lead the University of Maryland to 20th place in the team standings after Thursday's first round of the 2006 NCAA East Regional men's golf tournament being played at the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club. Maryland shot a 305 total as a team, ending the day just eight shots behind the 10th and final qualifying spot for the NCAA Nationals, to be held in Sunriver, Oregon. Jacksonville held down the 10th spot after a 297 on Thursday. The Terps finished the day just one shot behind South Carolina and three strokes behind Florida State. Peffley was tied for 39th place individually after the opening round. He had three birdies on the day and was at even par before bogeying the final two holes to come in at 74. Three other Terrapins were tied for 80th overall after shooting 77 on Thursday. Matt Schall birdied his first two holes of the day and played the front nine in 1-over-par 37. He suffered a triple bogey on the 10th hole and bogeyed the 18th to finish at 5-over-par. Tyler Witman also had three birdies on the day, but a pair of double bogeys kept him from rallying. John Eades was even between the eighth and 16th holes en route to his 77. Tully Coyle opened with an 83 for the Terps on Thursday. Top-seeded Georgia took the team lead after the first round, shooting 284. The Bulldogs were one shot better than Wake Forest and led UNLV by three strokes. Individually, Jonathan Jackson of North Carolina fired a 6-under-par 66 to take the first-round lead. He was one shot better than Georgia's Brendon Todd and two strokes better than Sean Moore of Wake Forest and Mark Stevens of Rhode Island. Maryland will tee off at 12:12 p.m. and will go off the 10th tee in Friday's second round.
