Men's Golf Finishes Second at Wofford Invitational
April 25, 1998 SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- In the third round of the Wofford Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Carolina Country Club, Maryland surged and recorded its lowest round score of the season and the second lowest round score of the tournament, a seven-under par 281, to finish in second place with a nine-under par 855. Capturing the team title was Augusta State, which finished with an 11-under par score of 853. Third-place went to Virginia Commonwealth which shot a six-under 858, while ACC rival Duke shot a one-under 863 to capture fourth-place. North Florida and North Carolina-Charlotte tied for fifth-place with a score of three-over 867 and Furman took seventh with a nine-over par score of 873. Rounding out the field were Georgia State (+12), College of Charleston (+13), Wofford (+34) and Virginia Tech (+38). After the first two rounds, Augusta State led Maryland, which was in third, by 11 strokes. The Terps, however, made a furious run for the top spot, but could not overcome a strong Jaguar team. Individually, the Terps placed four of their five competitors in the top 25 with junior Ed Flowerdew (Falmouth, Me.) leading the way. Flowerdew recorded his lowest round score of the season on Saturday, a 69, to finish in a tie for fifth-place with a three day total of 73-71-69-212 (-4). This also marked Flowerdew's best score of the season as well as his highest placing. Sophomore Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) tied for ninth-place with a three-under par score of 213 and junior Miguel Rivera (Joppa, Md.) finished in a tie for 14th place with a two-under 214. Freshman Gary Mankulish's (Laurel, Md.) three-over par score of 219 earned him a tie for 23rd place, while junior Mike Deo (Milford, N.J.) tied for 35th place with a six-over 222. The individual champion was North Carolina-Charlotte's Stefan VandenHeever, who entered the day in a two-way tie for first with Vaughn Taylor of Augusta State.
