Men's Golf in Third Place at Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Friday afternoon at the Carolina Country Club, Maryland shot a two-under par score of 574 to place third after the first day of the Wofford Invitational. Augusta State shot a tournament record 13-under 563 for 36 holes to vault ahead of the field into first-place and Virginia Commonwealth placed second with a four-under 572 score. North Florida University shot par and is in fourth-place, Duke is in fifth with a two-over par score of 578, North Carolina-Charlotte's six-over par score of 582 earned it sixth and Furman is in seventh with a nine-over 585. Rounding out the field are Georgia State (+11), College of Charleston (+15), Wofford (+17) and Virginia Tech (+31). Leading the Terps individually is junior Ed Flowerdew (Falmouth, Me.), currently tied for eighth-place after shooting one-under 143. This included a season-low round score of 71. Junior Miguel Rivera (Joppa, Md.) shot par and is tied for 16th after the first day, while sophomore Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) and freshman Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) are tied for 20th place with a one-over par score of 145. Junior Mike Deo (Milford, N.J.) shot a three-over 147 and is currently in a tie for 29th place. The individual leaders are North Carolina-Charlotte's Stefaan VanDenHeever and Augusta State's Vaughan Taylor who are tied atop the standings with a score of five-under 139. The Wofford Invitational, Maryland's last regular season meet, will conclude tomorrow.
