1998 Spring Review
The Terps' golf program came into the spring season looking to improve and improve it did. Excluding the ACC Championships, it finished seventh or higher in the last four tournaments. The Pepsi Intercollegiate at Bradford Creek began the turnaround for Maryland as it took the team title with a three-under par 861 and placed three individuals in the top 20. After placing seventh at the Furman Invitational, the Terps then finished in third place at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State University Invitational. After a disappointing performance at the ACC Championships, the Terps closed out the spring on a high note with a spring best score of nine-under par 855, earning them second place overall. Among the Terrapin golfers, the duo of Keith Unikel and Miguel Rivera provided much of the production for Maryland. Rivera and Unikel finished as the top two Terp golfers in five of Maryland's seven tournaments. Rivera's best outing of the spring came at the ACC Championships where he finished tied for 11th place with a four-under par 212. Unikel's best outing came in the last tournament of the spring, the Wofford Invitational, where he shot a three-under par 213 to finish tied for ninth. Unikel recorded at least one round of 60 in each of the last four tournaments. Also making a major contribution to the Terps was Mike Deo, who was Maryland's third highest finisher in four of the Terps' seven tournaments. He recorded a season best two-over par 218 at the Pepsi Intercollegiate at Bradford Creek. Ed Flowerdew also added production to the Terps' overall game with his best performance of the season coming in the last tournament of the spring, the Wofford Invitational. Flowerdew led all Terp golfers, finishing with a team and personal spring best four-under par, placing in a tie for fifth.
