Preseason Football Camp Log: Day 19
Aug. 29, 2009
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins completed another step in their preparation for the 2009 season as football camp came to an end Saturday.
The Terps, who open the regular season at No. 12 California one week from today, spent about 90 minutes working out at the on-campus practice facility. The team was scheduled to have a pair of practices Saturday.
"We cut it short today," head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "The kids were tired and it was humid. I didn't want to get anyone hurt. We worked very hard all camp. I've been very pleased with camp. I'll be anxious to see where we are when we get back."
After a fairly sharp morning practice which focused on the California game plan, Friedgen decided the evening workout was not necessary. Following practice, the team held meetings and a short lifting session, and is now off until Monday.
"I feel like they've done everything they can do between winter, spring, summer and two-a-days," Friedgen said. "Now it's just a time to get ready to play. We'll see where we are around this time next Saturday."
Friedgen announced after Saturday's practice that the team has voted four captains for the 2009 season.
Friedgen mentioned the possibility of naming captains over the summer to the team's leadership council, which includes those four players plus Cory Jackson, Alex Wujciak, Da'Rel Scott, Torrey Smith, Davin Meggett and Kevin Dorsey, and the squad voted at Friday's team meeting.
"I felt like we had a lot of quality kids to pick from," Friedgen said. "I think they made a good choice."
This is the first time the ninth-year head coach had the team elect season-long captains.
"If you elect the wrong captains, it can hurt you more than help you," Friedgen said. "I just felt with this team we had some real strong leaders. The percentages were better with these kids than any time since I've been here, other than maybe the first year. We had some real strong leaders that year as well."
Friedgen will name a special teams captain each week, who will join the other four at the coin toss. The team will also have a player from Maryland carry out the state flag and an out-of-state player bring out the American flag prior to each home game.
Friedgen Radio Show: The Ralph Friedgen Radio Show, which is presented by Outback Steakhouse, begins Wednesday and airs weekly throughout the season.
