COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Head coach Randy Edsall announced Friday that defensive line coach Greg Gattuso has been promoted to assistant head coach.

The former head coach of Duquesne (1992-04), Gattuso is entering his second year on the Maryland staff.

"Greg is a guy who I trust and there are so many things that come across my desk that he'll be able to help with," Edsall said. "He will assist me with things such as discipline issues, academics and fundraising."

Before coming to Maryland, Gattuso spent six seasons (2005-10) as the defensive line coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

He has developed a name as a top recruiter, having hauled in a top-10 class while serving as recruiting coordinator at Pittsburgh.

A defensive lineman on Penn State's national championship team in 1982, Gattuso led Duquesne to a 97-32 record during his head-coaching tenure.

The native of Pittsburgh, was also an assistant coach at Duquesne (1987, 1992) and a high school coach in Pennsylvania (Seton La Salle - 1985, 1989-91; Center Township - 1986 for five years.
