COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Keon Lattimore rushed for 80 yards and led Maryland receivers with four catches, leading the Terrapins' offense in a 31-14 defeat to No. 4 West Virginia Thursday night before 53,107 at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium.
The crowd was the fifth-largest in the history of the stadium.
Lattimore scored on a 4-yard run midway through the first quarter, marking his third straight game with a rushing touchdown.
Also for Maryland, quarterback Jordan Steffy tossed his first career touchdown pass, hitting Danny Oquendo with a 22-yarder late in the fourth period.
Steve Slaton ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns and Noel Devine amassed 125 yards on his first three carries for the Mountaineers. The freshman finished with 136 on five carries, including a 76-yard run to set up one of Slaton's touchdowns.
Maryland fumbled the snap on the first play from scrimmage, giving WVU a short field at the 20-yard line. Two plays later, White scampered in from 22 yards for the touchdown.
The Terrapins responded immediately, though, going 75 yards in 11 plays to set up Lattimore's 4-yard run that tied the game at 7-7 with 9:53 left in the first quarter.
West Virginia scored 24 unanswered points over the next two periods, turning a 14-7 halftime lead into a 31-7 advantage. The Mountaineers took control by going 63 yards in nine plays with the second-half kickoff, setting up a 1-yard score by Slaton.
Maryland finished the scoring with 5:50 left when Steffy found Oquendo. The Terrapins recovered the onside kick, but were unable to move downfield.
Erin Henderson led the Maryland defense with 11 tackles, his second straight game with double figures on the defensive chart.
The Terps are off until Saturday, Sept. 22 when they open conference play at Wake Forest (3:30 p.m./ESPNU).
