Henne Wants A Bowl Game In His Future
In 1996, Aaron Henne and the rest of the Terrapins have a goal that has eluded this football program since the 1990 season.
"In my senior season, it would be nice to play and win a bowl game," the guard says.
Henne started his first game of 1996 at right guard against NC State. However, Henne has not always been concerned with blocking for his backs and protecting his quarterback.
A product of Shaler Area High School in Allison Park, Pa, Henne was recruited as a defensive linemen. At Shaler Area, he was selected to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette "Fabulous 22" team, and was a first team Pittsburgh Press North All-Star choice.
In his first two season as a defensive tackle, Henne recorded 82 tackles for the Terps. However, in his junior year the versatile Henne made the transition to offensive guard.
"We needed some players to step up and fill in on the offensive line. The coaching staff felt that my athletic talents were better suited for offense."
Now that Henne has a year under his belt at offensive guard, he is ready for a big season.
"Last year, my biggest challenge was learning our offensive system. This season I'm focusing my attention on my technique. I have the strength, athletic ability and speed to be a successful offensive linemen."
Henne, a criminal justice major, has enjoyed his experience at College Park.
"They say you meet your closest friends in life at college. The friends I've made on the team are great. Everyone on our team is close, and that can only help our team be successful."
Last year, Henne and the Terrapins got off to the team's best start in a decade, earning the 17th-best ranking in the nation. Although the squad posted the school's first winning season since 1990, the struggles in the second half of the year has this team hungry for more.
"This year will be a different story," Henne says.
Even though Henne has played three seasons with the Terrapins, he is still looking for that big moment.
"I don't have a most memorable moment on the field, at least not yet. I'm sure I'll have one this season!"
