COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head basketball coach Gary Williams announced today the signing of swingman Michael Grinnon to a national letter-of-intent. Grinnon, a senior at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, N.Y., will attend Maryland beginning in fall 2001.

Grinnon, a 6-6, 195-pound shooting guard who is considered to be fundamentally sound, averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals last season at St. Dominic, a traditional Long Island powerhouse.

"He's a great outside shooter," said Williams whose No. 5-ranked Terrapins begin their regular season on Nov. 20 against Louisville in the Maui Invitational. "He really knows how to play the game. He has had a great summer and fall going into his senior year of high school."

Grinnon played for the Lightning at the annual Charlie Weber Tournament, held Sept. 15-17 at Maryland's Cole Field House, and also competed at fall tournaments at Rutgers and Connecticut.

Described by one recruiting publication as a very "cerebral" type of player, Grinnon is an outstanding student and a member of the National Honor Society.
