COLLEGE PARK, Md. - It seems like every major sports team has a group of loyal fans that have some sort of trademark behavior.
At Maryland, fans have been intrigued by a certain player like Bambale "Boom" Osby, a gesture like Gary Williams' fist pump or Greivis Vasquez's shimmy.
But now, a group of Maryland students is focusing on the head coach himself.
For the Turgeonites, a group of ten Maryland students, Coach Mark Turgeon is now the center of their attention. Led by James Morris and Cory Frontin, both 20-years old, the Turgeonites began dressing up in suits at games last season. When the group started, fans had no idea what they were doing.
"People didn't understand what we were doing," James and Cory wrote in an email. "But when we added the gray patches and made signs like `Fear the Turgeon,' it became clearer and fans immediately embraced us."
The group, which contemplated retiring after last season, has become a fixture at Maryland games.
"We thought about giving up on the idea, but our friends, family, and people on online message boards called for us to continue supporting the team with the suits."
Instead of giving up the idea, the Turgeonites have been at every game cheering and dancing behind the Maryland bench.
Their persistence and fandom has not gone unnoticed. The name "Turgeonites" was actually first used by Len Elmore during an ESPN broadcast. After the name stuck, Turgeon noticed the group and appreciates their support.
After the Boston College game, Turgeon took some time to meet the Turgeonites and take a picture with them on the Comcast Center floor.
"Meeting Coach Turgeon was a really cool experience," responded James and Cory. "It is always awesome to get a chance to meet someone you admire."
As lifelong Terps fans, the crew loves the tradition at Maryland and the excitement at each game. James, Cory, and the rest of the Turgeonites will be back at Comcast this Saturday cheering on the Terps as they host Wake Forest.
