Maryland Falls to Virginia
March 7, 2009
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Mamadi Diane hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining to give Virginia a 68-63 victory over Maryland on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Diane, who had been relegated to the bench for much of the season, finished with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. He nailed what would be the game-winning 3-pointer with the game tied at 61 and the shot clock running down.
Virginia hit four free throws in the final 11 seconds to seal the win.
With the win, Virginia (10-17, 4-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) snapped a four-game skid and completed a regular season in which it won just two ACC home games.
The Terrapins (18-12, 7-9), who were led by Greivis Vasquez's 21 points, will likely need to go on a run in next week's ACC tournament starting on Thursday to get into the NCAA tournament.
