COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team began its fall scrimmages Friday evening at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium at Shipley Field, as David Poutier scored four runs to lead his Black team to victory, 11-1, in the first game of the Red-Black World Series.

The Black squad got on the board quickly to start. Poutier doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and was brought home two batters later on a double by Brandon Padula, who tied for the team high with three RBIs in his first action in a Maryland uniform.

Padula scored later in the inning on a single by Alfredo Rodriguez Jr., who also notched three RBIs for the Black team.

The Red team answered back in the third inning with a run of its own, scoring Anthony Perez on a single by Mike Rozak to cut the Black lead to 2-1, but that would be the end of the Red squad's offensive attack.

Brett Harman, John Dischert and Dan Gentzler combined to pitch six shutout innings with nine combined strikeouts to close out the game for the Black team. The Black offense added two runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth to pad the team's lead.

Eric Potter earned the win as the Black team's starter, allowing one unearned run on two hits in three innings of work. Adam Kolarek took the loss for the Red squad.

The game marked the first on-field action for the Terps under new head coach Erik Bakich. The team will scrimmage again at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

All Red-Black World Series games are free to the public.
